Set up Notion export

Notion export needs two things: an integration token and a database ID. Follow these 4 steps (about 5 minutes).

1

Create an integration

  • Open notion.so/my-integrations and sign in to Notion.
  • Click + New integration. Name it Sumreel, choose your workspace, keep Type as Internal, then click Submit.
  • On the integration page, go to Secrets / Internal Integration Secret → Show → Copy (looks like ntn_xxx or secret_xxx).
  • If the key is ever exposed, you can Regenerate it on the same page to invalidate the old one.
2

Create a database with a "title" property

  • In Notion, create a new page → type /table → choose Table → New database.
Critical: Rename the database's first title property to title (all lowercase). Click the property name → Rename → type title. Keep the type as Title. If the property name is anything else, export will fail — this is the most common setup mistake.
3

Connect the database to your integration

  • Open your database page → click ··· (top right) → Connections (older Notion versions: Add connections).
  • Search for and select Sumreel.
Don't skip this step. Without granting access, your integration cannot read or write to the database and you'll get a 404 error.
4

Copy the database ID

  • On the database page → ··· → Copy database ID (available in newer Notion versions).
  • Or copy the link to the database and take the 32-character string between notion.so/ and ?v=.
  • In the Sumreel extension → Settings, paste your Token and Database ID → Save → Test Notion connection.

Set up Obsidian export

1

Install Obsidian and open a vault

Download the desktop app from obsidian.md, install it, and open or create a vault.

2

Enter your vault name in Sumreel

In extension Settings, enter your Vault name — case-sensitive, name only (no file path) → Save.

When you click Send to Obsidian, the extension opens Obsidian via the obsidian://new?vault=... protocol to create a new note. Your browser may ask "Open Obsidian?" the first time — click Allow. If the summary exceeds ~8,000 characters, Sumreel automatically downloads a .md file instead (expected behavior — drag it into your vault).

Test and fix common issues

Generate a summary, then click the Send icon in the export bar. Confirm the note appears in Notion or Obsidian.

Symptom Likely cause Fix
"Notion database not found" (404) Missing Connections authorization (Step 3) Open your database → ··· → Connections → add Sumreel
"Notion database needs a title property named title" (400) Database is missing a title property Rename the first Title property to title (Step 2)
"Notion token is invalid" (401) Wrong token, regenerated key, or extra spaces Go back to my-integrations and copy the secret again
Obsidian doesn't open Desktop app not installed, wrong vault name, or browser blocked the protocol Check: Obsidian is installed, vault name matches exactly (case-sensitive), and you allowed the browser prompt
Content downloads as .md file Obsidian URI has an ~8,000 character limit Normal fallback — drag the downloaded .md into your vault
Your Notion token is stored locally in your browser (chrome.storage.local). It is never sent to our servers. The integration can only access the database you explicitly connected. Questions? help@sumreel.app
